THE
VALLEY
The quaint village of Athens is ideally located two hours from
NYC and close to all the Hudson Valley and Catskill region has to
offer. It is easily accessible from the NY state Thruway or the
Taconic Parkway and the Amtrak train station is also only 15
minutes away in Hudson. Nestled between the shores of the Hudson
River and the foothills of the Catskill mountains, Athens is close to
any activities one might hope for: boating, swimming, hiking, skiing,
golf, tennis, rock climbing,, fruit picking, antiquing, sightseeing, or
museum hopping. Neighboring Catskill has become a burgeoning art
center with a revitalized main street lined with interesting shops,
restaurants and a movie theater. Hudson, directly across the river
(there used to be a ferry between Athens and Hudson), is well
established as a sophisticated location for antique shops, restaurants
and cultural events. Frank Gehry’s new Fisher Performing Arts Center at
Bard College is only 25 minutes away. The larger cities of Albany
and Kingston are both only a half hour away and host major
medical facilities and an international airport as well as plenty of
shopping and entertainment. Tanglewood and the Berkshires,
Saratoga and the Adirondacks are all within a short drive as well.
Athens itself has become widely known for its unique charm, historic
houses and access to the river. It has attracted many artists who
have made their home here, either in year round residences or weekend
homes. Within the village are several fine restaurants, boat
launches and dockage, an exciting cultural center which hosts art
exhibitions, classes and poetry readings and a convenience store so one
never has to go far for a newspaper or a quart of milk. A stone’s
throw from Frederick Church’s Olana and Thomas Cole’s Cedar
Grove, Athens is at the center of the natural beauty that inspired
America’s first true style of painting: The Hudson River
School of Art.
